On Saturday, I joined a group of exchange students on a wet market tour, led by two awesome CUHK seniors. Close childhood friends, they both grew up and still live around Kennedy Town. Their commute to campus is over an hour, but they waved it off and said they saved money by living at home. They showed us around multiple markets in the northwest part of Hong Kong Island and told us about the history of some streets. One street in Wan Chai used to be renowned for its prostitutes back in the day. Presently, Wan Chai is still known as Hong Kong’s red light district with its “girlie bars” and busy nightlife. I was surprised to learn that prostitution is legal in Hong Kong.

We walked about 7 miles around Hong Kong Island and I got to take the tram for the first time! Hong Kong locals informally call it Ding Ding because of the sound it makes to warn pedestrians. We stopped for yum cha at one of the markets and got some classic milk tea in old glass coke bottles.
