The Sunday after visiting Big Buddha and Tai O, I hiked the iconic Lion Rock, which marks the boundary between Kowloon and the New Territories. While I was FaceTiming my dad post-hike, he told me how he grew up only about a mile away from the mountain ridge and how, as a little kid, he had always wanted to climb it. The ascent up the stone trail was steep and seemingly endless, but halfway up, we spotted several wild boar and a macaque monkey rummaging through the dense greenery and got excited enough to scramble up the rest of the way to the peak. Before we made it to the major viewing site, my friends and I took a detour that was off the beaten path. After trekking up such a steep incline, we clambered to the top of large boulders that looked out over Kowloon. It was amazing. We stayed there for almost twenty minutes taking in the view.
After a long and even more steep descent from the peak, we recovered our energy at Genki Sushi, which is the largest chain of sushi restaurants in HK and serves the sushi on a conveyor belt. It was a lot better (and surprisingly cheaper!) than the good old Japan Inn back in Greenville. Sea urchin was yummy!
