Mong Kok

Tuesday (no class!), I met up with friends to explore the flower market in Mong Kok. I have never seen so many flourishing orchids in my life. My poor orchid at home hasn’t bloomed for years. I’m sorry, Orchid-at-Home. Consumers huddled around iPads and crates of bulbs to watch how to cultivate a bulb of their own. A lot of them walked off, saying it was too much work in Cantonese. We then found the bird garden/market, where there were stacked cages of small birds and big birds cuffed and chained to bird stands. A parrot greeted us repeatedly with “hello” when we walked past. Locals also sat on benches under the cages of their birds, which they would hang on the various rods located around the garden. It was interesting seeing the contrast between the pigeons flying around so carelessly and the birds stuck behind bars.
