Hong Kong Flower Show

I spent this Saturday with my grandmother and great uncle, who are currently visiting from the UK. It’s been great getting to spend time with them as I only get to see them once every few years when we visit England or they come to the US. My grandfather hadn’t yet arrived in Hong Kong when we went to Flower Show; he had a golf tournament back in England. The Hong Kong Flower Show was displayed at Victoria Park, where the big Chinese New Year Flower Market was also held. However, instead of busy rows of vendors and canopies, there were organized squares of flowerbeds and creative floral arrangements. Among the set up tents were presentations of traditional Chinese herbs and medicinal plants, which luckily for me had translations on the labels of each plant. My grandmother and great uncle took great interest in finding the English translations for some of the plants they had in England and Portugal.

Much of our time at the Flower Show was spent perusing the many vibrant orchid stalls, which were selling them at very reduced prices, since it was the last day of the Flower Show. My grandmother and great uncle each bought three budding orchids and only spent a total of about 15 USD total! We also stopped to pick up some prepackaged snacks for later (crispy jelly fish, kelp, seaweed) and I tried sugarcane juice for the first time. Not surprisingly, it was insanely and refreshingly sweet.

Later, we met with close family friends near Times Square for dim sum and coffee after. That night, we met again for Peking duck, one of my favorite meals. We then went from dinner to dessert at the 50’s Bar & Restaurant. It had been a Saturday well spent with great food and company!
